The Great Outdoors of Mauritania

This circuit from Saint-Louis, in the north of Senegal, will allow you to discover the riches of the Mauritania destination. Breathtaking landscapes await you. Lovers of the great outdoors, we offer this trip to the heart of sublime desert landscapes, between architectural heritage, preserved nature, authentic and friendly people.

  • Possibility to schedule a first night in Saint-Louis before departure

 

Program

Day 1: Saint-Louis – Nouakchott

Departure from Saint-Louis at 7:30 am, crossing the border at the Diama dam, Senegalese police formalities at the border, then crossing the dam. Frontier formalities on the Mauritanian side. These formalities can last two hours, you should know, if you take the visa at the border.

Continuation by the dike which runs along the Diaouling park, in winter you can observe warthogs and birds of several species. We will join the tar of Nouakchott the capital of Mauritania. Picnic lunch along the road and arrival between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. in Nouakchott.

Overnight in Nouakchott or 40 km from Nouakchott in bivouac.

 

Day 2: Nouakchott – Tergit

After a breakfast, It is the departure by the road which goes towards Akjoudj, the copper city that we will cross, we will see the first mountains and the first beautiful dunes. We will reach the Adrar after a picnic along the way.

Arrival at Tergit Installation at the Inn, then visit the palm grove and its sources. It’s a little paradise embedded in a canyon, where the water is constantly flowing. The temperature drops several degrees from the outside. (for the brave round by the top of the canyon). Return to the hostel Dinner and overnight.

 

Day 3: Tergit – Atar – Chinguetti

Breakfast then departure for Atar by a road dug in the mountains of the Adrar, crossing of Atar, with a stop at the Market, continuation by the pass of Amodjar where we will make a stop to observe the majestic landscape. We will leave the track to go observe the cave paintings in a cave near the old track, you can from far away because the pass is not maintained see Fort Sagane. Arrival in Chinguetti and installation at the caravan inn at Ahmed’s place. Lunch.

At the end of the afternoon you can go to the library and the old town of Chinguetti (possibility of making this trip by dromedaries). Dinner and overnight at Chinguetti.

 

Day 4: Chinguetti – M’haireth

Breakfast and departure to go see the most beautiful dunes of Mauritania, in the wadi of Chinguetti, then return to Chinguetti where we recharge the 4X4 to go by old track to the oasis of M’Haireth.

Picnic along the way. Installation of the bivouac then in the afternoon, we will go on foot in the canyons in search of water holes in magnificent landscapes. Dinner and overnight under the stars.

 

Day 5: M’haireth – Nouakchott

Breakfast departure very early for Nouakchott, and lunch en route. Visit to the markets, possibility to buy tents or old pearls, overnight at the hotel or inn.

 

Day 6: Nouakchott – Saint-Louis

Breakfast then departure for Saint-Louis. Arrival for lunch. End of our services.

Optional:

  • Extension to Saint-Louis or for a seaside stay in a lodge
  • Organized transfer to Dakar or your destination of choice in Senegal
